Old and new norton antivirus software?

If old software, say 2004, can get virus updates, what is the use of making new software? Is it just that the features are increased, and is the level of protection the same if both are updated to the latest definitions?

Some antivirus software makers provide updates to a certain point for a particular version then stop any further updates for an old version and don't support it any longer so the latest version will be purchased. I stopped using Norton anti-virus because it can develop it's own problems and binds itself so much into the Windows registry. I have been using AVG free version for the last few years and it's worked much better for me than Norton and updates are free.

noep dont do it
First thing to do is get rid of Norton before you have so many viruses that your system locks up.Then go to www.filehippo.com and download and install AVG Free. After you do you'll find out just how many viruses you've got. I had over 200.
most virus software stop protecing you after a year so although they update they come up with a wa to force you to get a new one evey year.
the newer recognizes more viruses and has more patches to better protect your computer. Also all versions expire after a year, so the 2004 version is probably expired by now. Besides whats the big deal...norton cost like $20 or less
I was told by a guy who has been building pc's for about 15 yrs. not to use Norton or Macafee...he said that they act just like viruses on your pc and are hell to get rid of!
McAffee is the only one I know of that gives you virus updates, except the free version, AVG
You're a moron for using norton in the first place.
Norton sucks! use avg it is free
