i want to run avast instead. is that a good idea?

If you are going to change, the best thing to do is to delete Norton. More than one virus protector can cause conflicts. Norton is well known and popular so Virus writers can try and target it to not run and delete their virus.

Avast is good.

I think the best one is Nod32. It is not free but better than the rest.

You must COMPLETELY uninstall Norton before using Avast or else they will conflict and leave you with little protection as well as slow your computer down. Simply disabling it is NOT good enough.

Norton can be a real pain to uninstall. You may need to download and run the Norton Removal Tool from the Norton / Symantic website.
