I'll click on the button to start a scan, and wait for a half hour, but it won't start?

Most probably a malware infection has killed it. Nothing new here,Norton IS that bad -it can't even protect himself.

First do an online scan and clean with http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

Now it's time to replace that miserable insecurity software that you use; download the installers for

Unplug the internet line, uninstall the junk and install these (if

necessary in safe mode) one by one with each necessary reboot done.

Reconnect the line and update them (Spybot has it manual).

That's all. Now admire how fast and safe (only if you never use IE again) your pc is.

I would try rebooting your computer and running the scan again. If that doesn't work, reboot and run in safe mode. If THAT doesn't work, you should uninstall Norton and reinstall it.

Look through your temp and system32 folders for any suspicious looking entries added recently. Try and recall sites you've visited and if you think they may be dangerous. Think of things you have downloaded recently.

You could also opt for different software. avast! and AVG are fantastic; Norton is less than perfect. avast! and AVG offer free trials.
